What is the CSM Certification?

The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) is an entry-level Scrum certification issued by the Scrum Alliance—the world's largest and most established agile certification body. Unlike PMI certifications that focus on broad project management, the CSM validates your understanding of the Scrum framework and your ability to serve as a Scrum Master on agile teams.

The CSM is unique among professional certifications because it requires completing a two-day course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) before you can attempt the exam. This ensures every CSM holder has received hands-on, interactive training—not just book knowledge.

As the most widely recognized Scrum certification globally, the CSM is valued across industries adopting agile practices, including software development, IT, product management, financial services, and healthcare. It's the first step in the Scrum Alliance certification track, which progresses from CSM to Advanced CSM (A-CSM) to Certified Scrum Professional (CSP-SM).

Who Should Get CSM Certified?

The CSM is designed for anyone who wants to work on or lead Scrum teams. With no prerequisites and a required training course, it's built for people who want structured learning and a clear path into agile roles.

CSM is ideal if you...

Want to become a Scrum Master or work on Scrum teams
Are a project manager transitioning to agile methodologies
Work as a developer, tester, or team lead adopting Scrum
Want a structured course experience rather than self-study
Need a globally recognized credential for agile roles
Are new to Scrum and want foundational training

Consider other options if you...

Already know Scrum well and prefer self-study (consider PSM)
Need broad agile knowledge beyond Scrum (consider PMI-ACP)
Want traditional project management credentials (consider PMP or CAPM)

CSM Requirements & Eligibility

The CSM has the simplest requirements of any major project management certification. There are no prerequisites—no experience, no education requirements, no application process. You just need to complete an approved course and pass the exam.

1

Complete a 2-Day CSM Course

Attend a 14-16 hour course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). Courses are available in-person or live online, but self-paced options don't qualify. The course covers the entire Scrum framework through interactive exercises and simulations.

2

Pass the CSM Exam

After completing your course, you'll receive a link to take the online exam. You have 90 days to pass, with two attempts included in your course fee. The exam is 50 multiple-choice questions with a passing score of 37/50 (74%).

Additional Requirements:

Must be 18 years or older
Accept the Scrum Alliance license agreement
Create a Scrum Alliance profile

Unlike PMI certifications that require extensive applications and potential audits, CSM registration is handled entirely through your course provider. For a complete breakdown of what to expect, see our CSM Requirements guide.

CSM Exam Format & Structure

The CSM exam is designed to confirm you absorbed the course material—not to trick you. With a ~98% pass rate, it's one of the most accessible certification exams available.

The 15 pretest questions are unmarked experimental questions PMI uses to evaluate for future exams. You won't know which ones they are, so treat every question as if it counts. With 180 minutes for 150 questions, you have about 72 seconds per question—enough time to read carefully, but not enough to linger on difficult ones.

Question Types

Multiple Choice:
Select one correct answer from four options. Questions are based on the Scrum Guide and course material. No trick questions—answers are straightforward if you paid attention during training.
Scenario-Based:
Many questions present a workplace situation and ask how a Scrum Master should respond. These test your understanding of the Scrum Master role and servant leadership principles.

The exam is open-book technically, but with only 72 seconds per question, there's no time to look things up. Most candidates who fail simply didn't engage during the course. Take the exam within a few days of completing your training while the material is fresh. For detailed preparation strategies, see our CSM Exam Format guide.

The CSM Course Experience

The mandatory two-day course is what sets CSM apart from other certifications. Rather than months of self-study, you'll learn the Scrum framework through an intensive, interactive training experience led by an expert practitioner.

What to Expect

36%

Your CSM course will be 14-16 hours over two days, either consecutive (Monday-Tuesday) or split across a weekend (Saturday-Sunday). Expect a mix of lecture, group exercises, Scrum simulations, and Q&A. You'll practice facilitating Scrum events, work through real-world scenarios, and collaborate with other aspiring Scrum Masters.

Topics Covered

17%

• The Scrum framework: roles, events, and artifacts
• Scrum Master responsibilities and servant leadership
• Working with Product Owners and Development Teams
• Facilitating Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Retrospectives
• Removing impediments and protecting the team
• Agile principles and the Agile Manifesto

Choosing Your Course

20%

All CSM courses must be taught by Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainers (CSTs), ensuring consistent quality. When selecting a course, consider: trainer reviews and experience, class size (smaller is often better), in-person vs. online format, and schedule (weekday vs. weekend).

The course investment typically ranges from $995 to $1,500+ depending on trainer, location, and format. For guidance on selecting the right course, see our CSM Training Providers guide.

How to Get CSM Certified

Unlike PMI certifications with lengthy applications, the CSM process is straightforward. You can go from registration to certified in as little as one week.

1

Choose a CSM Course

Browse the Scrum Alliance website or search for Certified Scrum Trainers in your area. Compare trainers based on reviews, format (in-person vs. online), schedule, and price. Book your course—most fill up 2-4 weeks in advance.

2

Complete the 2-Day Course

Attend all sessions and participate actively. The course covers the entire Scrum framework through lectures, exercises, and simulations. Take notes on concepts you want to review before the exam.

3

Receive Your Exam Link

After completing the course, your trainer will register you with Scrum Alliance. You'll receive an email with instructions to create your Scrum Alliance account and access the exam.

4

Pass the Online Exam

Take the 50-question exam from any computer within 90 days of completing your course. You have 60 minutes and need 37 correct answers to pass. Two attempts are included with your course fee.

5

Accept License Agreement

After passing, you'll accept the Scrum Alliance license agreement and complete your profile. This takes just a few minutes.

6

Receive Your CSM Certification

Your CSM credential is activated immediately. You can download your certificate and add the CSM designation to your name and LinkedIn profile right away.

The entire process can be completed in under a week if you take a weekend course and pass the exam promptly. For help choosing the right course, see our CSM Training Providers guide.

CSM Exam Costs

CSM pricing works differently from PMI certifications. Instead of paying separate fees for education and exams, you pay one course fee that includes everything—training, exam attempts, and your initial certification.

CSM Course Fee
$995–$1,500+
Exam Fee
Included in course
Exam Retake (if needed)
Included (2 attempts)
Third Attempt (if needed)
$25
2-Year Scrum Alliance Membership
Included
Total Initial Investment
$995–$1,500+
Renewal (every 2 years)
$100 + 20 SEUs

Is the course fee worth it?

The all-inclusive pricing model means no surprises. Your course fee covers:

2-day interactive training with a Certified Scrum Trainer
All course materials
CSM exam (two attempts)
2-year Scrum Alliance membership
CSM certification upon passing
Access to Scrum Alliance resources and community

What affects pricing:

Format:
Online courses typically cost $995–$1,200; in-person courses run $1,200–$1,500+
Trainer reputation:
Well-known trainers with strong reviews often charge premium rates
Location:
Major cities and corporate training tend to cost more
Class size:
Smaller, more personalized sessions may be priced higher
Extras:
Some courses include practice exams, post-course coaching, or bonus materials

Most employers reimburse CSM training costs, so check with your manager or HR department before paying out of pocket. For a complete cost breakdown and money-saving strategies, see our CSM Cost guide.

Maintaining Your CSM Certification

Your CSM certification is valid for two years. To keep it active, you'll need to earn continuing education credits and pay a renewal fee—but the requirements are manageable and many options are free.

Renewal requirements

Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years

SEUs Required: 20 Scrum Education Units

Renewal Fee: $100

Membership: Included with active certification

How to Earn SEUs

Scrum Education Units (SEUs) are similar to PDUs for PMI certifications. One SEU equals approximately one hour of learning. You can earn them through:

  • ✓ Attending Scrum Alliance courses and webinars (many free)
  • ✓ Participating in Scrum Alliance events and conferences
  • ✓ Independent learning (reading books, watching videos)
  • ✓ Volunteering with Scrum Alliance or agile community groups
  • ✓ Coaching, mentoring, or presenting on Scrum topics
  • ✓ Taking advanced courses (A-CSM, CSP-SM)
  • Free SEU options

You can earn all 20 required SEUs for free through Scrum Alliance webinars, self-directed reading, community participation, and volunteering. Many CSM holders complete their renewal requirements without spending anything beyond the $100 fee.

    Certification pathway

The CSM is just the beginning. The Scrum Alliance certification track continues with:CSMA-CSM (Advanced) → CSP-SM (Professional) → CTC/CEC (Coach/Trainer)

For a complete guide to SEU categories, free earning options, and the renewal process, see our CSM Renewal guide.

    Understanding the Scrum Master Role

The Scrum Master is one of the most misunderstood roles in tech. It's not a project manager, not a team lead, and not a boss. Understanding what Scrum Masters actually do helps you decide if this career path is right for you.

    What Scrum Masters Do

Scrum Masters are servant leaders who help teams work effectively within the Scrum framework. They facilitate Scrum events (Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Retrospective), remove impediments blocking the team, coach team members on Scrum practices, and protect the team from distractions and scope creep.

    Scrum Master vs. Project Manager

    Scrum Master

    Facilitates and coaches
    Serves the team
    Removes impediments
    No people management
    Focuses on process

    Project Manager

    Directs and controls
    Manages the team
    Assigns tasks
    Often has direct reports
    Focuses on deliverables

    Key Skills for Success

    Facilitation and coaching abilities
    Conflict resolution and communication
    Patience and empathy
    Understanding of agile principles
    Organizational awareness
    Continuous improvement mindset

The CSM certification validates your understanding of these responsibilities, but becoming an effective Scrum Master takes practice. For a deep dive into the role, see our Scrum Master Role guide.
